China Station Episode 7

Episode 7 found us competing for the Wulin Scroll. An eight move game with turns going quickly and the scroll switching hands several times. Matt extended the game by one turn but it didn’t help me as he had the scroll and I couldn’t grab it back. I didn’t get any pictures of the action but here’s a few game photos.

 We’ve been getting in a fair amount of games. Looking to get a grip on Pulp Alley that’s mostly what’s going on the table. 

I've been Tangoed!

 Last month while scrolling through The Miniatures Page I saw a post for Donnybrook GNW. Certainly a period and rules I'd be interested in. I clicked on it and was a bit surprised it was a post about one of my own blog posts. I then realized that I hadn't posted in quite awhile and needed to get back into the blogsphere. So here's a bit of a gaming update to start with.

As part of the get the figures we have and rules we own onto the table we started out with Fireball Forward and some Pacific figures.

We've enjoyed the games and found the scenarios gave a tense game. Out came the Americans and Germans.

After 5-6 games we took a break and went with A Gentleman's War set in the AWI. 

Then with only a short time to play we went with One Hour Skirmish Wargames. The first game took a little longer but we got the hang of it and knocked out a couple of more. Interwar with Mark's Little Soldiers and East Front WW2.

The Last few weeks have been the Wild West with Ruthless and Warhammer Legends of the Old West.

While there hasn't been much blogging there has been three new rulesets played and six armies either new or not used in several years out on the table. Yes we did play a game of Donnybrook but set in the AWI and I didn't get any pictures.

"The Bear" Fireball Forward Guadalcanal scenario.

One of the games on the the list to try this year is Fireball Forward.It's for company level actions similar to Crossfire. Using a card activation system players alternat moving units but all units get to activte each turn. The firing system seemed a bit fiddly at first but once we became accustomed to it worked well. You roll a white D6,a red D6 and a D20. The white die is what's used to determin hits and can be modified. The red die only hits on a 6. The D20 adds range to the base fire range. Movement is anywhere in a 12" radius contingent on terrain.The system takes a lillte bit to wrap your head around but seems to work well. They have a few videos on YouTube explaining the game seaquence and an iogroups. Last night we played our second game using The Bear scenario from the The Marines at Guadalcanal book. The Japanese had to eliminate more Marine units than they lost and exit a squad and platoon leader off the board. The Mairines had to not let that happen.

I was a hard fought contest but I believe the Marines eeked out a victory. More photos from the Japanese view point here Thanks for reading.

One for three!

With any new set of rules we've been trying to get three or so games in before passing judgement. This week One Hour Skirmish Wargames was the choice. The first scenario Capture the Cannon was a good introduction and justified me bringing my GNW figures out of their box. The rules are true to thier name and play quickly. I've used them before for solo play but never against a live opponent. Just as much fun! The turn sequence keeps you involved and time goes by quickly. Our first game was done in about forty-five minuets. We set back up and played again and then switched sides.

Three games done in one night. There's no doubt we'll ne playing more. As Matt suggests here maybe the One-hour Ancient and Medieval Skirmish Wargames

Finally a Game.

 After a long break from gaming we finally got one in. The Mark's Little Soldiers were brought out and we used the work in progress Twilight of a Gentleman's War. 

The scenario required each for to break out from their trenches and occupy several buildings. I decided to hold my left flank and concentrate on the right. The cards favored the blue force to begin with but a surge in the middle gave me a chance but in the end my army was forced out on the left and decimated on the right.

Green reconnoiter the line of attack

Army Green's troops move to the first building.

Army Blue take control of a building.

Action puts most of the Green troops out of action and the Building catches fire.

Last ditch effort offers a glimmer of hope but it was not enough.

TYW progress.

 Bases arrived from Scotland, 2.75" wide for Infantry and 2" for cavalry. A few unites were based to give a better idea of how they will look. I used the basing from Tercios . I'm a bit on the fence about leaving them unflocked but think they look good as is and if used on a plain table with a grid.

The grid will be a bit bigger than the one shown here. I'll need a few trees and houses which I have but can't seem to locate. 

This came in the mail last week. Scottish troops and some additional musketeers marching to go with the advancing pikemen that came in the army packs.
