The end of the month dispatch

Not looking to rush the year along it's time to recount what i did this month.

I managed to finish twenty AWI British which are based as singles to be used in Sharp Practice also two skeletons for Frostgrave moved off the painting bench. A shotgun house from 4ground was built even though I missed a couple of pieces it still looks good.

The big success for the month though was getting five games in. The first was a game of AGW, then came CoC with a game on Thursday night and another on Sunday both exciting games.

A break from the 6x6 saw a game of Howard's Alien War .50 being played. We had done a few games of this years ago so when Howard was given/lent an Post Apocalyptic urban set up he pulled the game out again. The game was a blast. I was a squad of marines attempting to recover a satellite and he was a group of mercenaries with same goal. Things didn't go well for me from the start and although I was able to put some damage on his group it wasn't enough to achieve our mission so I was forced to fall back.

The final game of the month was another of AGW this time using the 18th century variant and Howard's collection of 30mm flats. These are the toys that were sold on the back of comic books in the 1960s. I was the gallant Patriots and Howard played the oppressive British. His mission was to destroy my command. As his force advanced I was able to get my cavalry on his flank and destroy one unit of his cavalry. He pressed my center hard and moved his first nation allies up on my flank but after some fine firing by my riflemen my cavalry was able to destroy the rest of his cavalry and threaten his center. At this point the British realized they wouldn't complete their objective and fell back to regroup and fight another day.

I'm pretty happy with my hobby activity this month. Purchasing some Bolt Action figures and some Battlefront minis didn't help with The Pledge but I did keep the number I'm behind low. Getting five games in was a big plus.

I joined a Saga campaign as Vikings and at the moment am waiting for my set of rules to arrive. There should be enough figures in my collection to build a six point force but I may still pick up a few new figures.

    1. It's a pleasure to just sit a look at them throughout the game. The trees in the background are flats as well.

  2. I have a rather large collection of the "round" comic books ARW figures. I must admit that the way you are using the flats, I wish my collection were the flats. They look real "old school".

    1. My brother had the round one's. These are much nicer but as a kid I think I would have been disapointed in the flats.

  3. I used to have hundreds of the rounds--really, they were terrible. For example, the tricorns are solid triangles, not unlike the "cheese hats" worn by Green Bay Packer fans. The plastic is very, very soft, which undermined the clarity of the sculpting (such as it was).

I got a set of the flats and loved them; unfortunately, my parents did not, and would not let me order more. I've bought a few sets (or parts of sets) the past few years on eBay, and now have enough to do the sort of game pictured here. I may go for the 7 Years War, though, as I already have AWI figures in other scales. The cavalry are all light dragoons, of course, but switching heads with the fairly useless fifers will enable me to field heavy dragoons and cuirassiers.

The Indians will be unusable, and even after conversions I will have way too much cavalry, but I'm sure they will sell on eBay!

    Your troops are great!

    Best regards,

    Chris Johnson

    1. Thanks. Actually they're my friend Howards figures. He's done some conversion on a few and they've come out quite nice. We played again last night an AAR will folllow in a few days.

I hope you don't mind but i took the liberty of forwarding your comments to Howard.

I would enjoy seeing photos of your figures.

  4. Hey Chris!

I've been converting away, since, as you say, the mix of figures is very limited. I converted some of the extra First Nations figures into American riflemen with extra tricorne heads, and used paper 'fronts' to make some of the native heads into light infantry helmets.

  5. Oooo--converting Indians into something more useful sounds good! There is a lot of waste (so to speak) in these sets--WAY too many Indians and Light Dragoons, and those useless fifers....! My initial impulse was to use officers as flag bearers, but I will need them for other things, and thus will probably use odds and ends (such as excess Minutemen) instead. Ah well, all part of the excitement, right? If you find you need a couple of something to complete a unit, let me know! [bumbydadATgmailDOTcom]

BTW, the hundreds of rounds I had wound up in Wally Simon's hands. After his death they made their way to the HAWKS, who gave them away as part of their first "Armies for Kids" project! Small world (in our hobby especially.)

    Best regards,

    Chris

  6. Your photos of the Helen of Toy hard plastic AWI flats bring back memories Of my as a young lad. I was do disappointed when these flats arrived. I was expecting 3D figures like I had received in some of the other sets. It would be fun to hav those old figures now, though.

  7. I know what you mean. My brother had the 3D AWI figures and they were a disappointment especially after Aifix came out with their AWI sets.
